Ever get an idea and you are so excited about it that you gather the supplies and learn as you go? This was definitely one of those times! My best friend was working on a coffee table project and mentioned wanting to use gel stain for the top. After all these years of DIY, somehow I had never heard of gel stain! I had been putting off this project since part of the railing is attached to the wall and flooring and I had no idea how to strip the current stain without making a huge mess and potentially ruining something. Gel stain seemed the like perfect way to darken them to match the flooring.
The space to the right of the garage door used to have a top cabinet with glass doors and backsplash. I instantly thought of "Fixer Upper" and said "Joanna would put open shelving here". I searched Instagram for inspiration. There are a lot of options when it comes to the design! Did I want floating shelves? Or use brackets? Then there were a million options for brackets!
The photo ledge is the new gallery wall. This trend will be everywhere this year and for less than $20 you can DIY your own!
It's technically called cornice board, but cornice is such a strange word. So window treatment it is! Many hobby and craft stores sell versions of a cornice board, but for much, much more than if you made it yourself. We recently built three for the bay window in our breakfast nook. Since the space has a table and chairs, standard curtains wouldn't work. I considered valances, but wanted a more polished, structured look.
